Episode 14: Basic Future Tense

학생들 안녕~! 마가리타입니당!

Sorry for being away for so long but now I'm back and ready to delve into the beautiful world of Korean conjugation :D And this week we'll be discussing future tense, which will conclude our lessons on basic verb and adjective conjugation. So let's gooooooo!

HOW TO CONJUGATE?

1. Verb + (으)ㄹ 거예요 --> Simply describes a fact that will happen in the future

나는 내일에 영화를 볼거예요 - I will watch a movie tomorrow.

다음 주 학교에 갈거예요 - Next week I will go to school.

2. Verb + (으)ㄹ 게요 --> Stating a fact in the future and expecting reaction or reacting to something someone said and also subtly asking whether the listener would want to object to what the speaker is about to do.

문을 열어 줄게 - I will open the door (for you, if that's ok)

지금 밥을 먹을게요 - I will eat now (if that's ok with you)

먼저 갈게요 - I will go first (if that's ok with you)

3. Verb + (으)ㄹ 래요 --> Expresses a will to do something in the future and the ability to do so. Can also be used as a question about listener's intentions. Very informal so refrain from using in situation when formal speech is expected.

혼자 할래요 - (I want to do that alone and) I will do that alone

뭐 마실래요? - What would you like to drink?

언제 만날래? - When do you want to meet?

4. Verb + 겠 -- Used to ask someone’s intention, to express what you are going to do, to talk about something that will happen, to show your assumption about something, or to talk about possibilities or capabilities.

이게 좋겠어요 - I think this will be good.

아프겠어요 - That must hurt.

내일 날씨가 춥젰어요 - I think the weather will be cold tomorrow.

There is so much more left to cover when it comes to future tense that I will definitely not stop here and continue to throw information at you guys in bite-size chunks in future videos, so please STAY TUNED! :)

If you have any questions, let me know!

Much love,

x
